Good food near the Colosseum is closer than you think

Where to Eat in Rome

Where to Eat Near the Colosseum

A lot of people assume everywhere near the Colosseum is a tourist trap. That is not the case.

There are some great places to eat close by, you just have to know which ones and which streets to walk to. Here are the spots I recommend.

For a real Roman trattoria

Il Bocconcino is one of the few Slow Food restaurants in the area. The cooking is fresh and traditional, and the spaghetti all'amatriciana is exactly what it should be.

The inside is small and casual, and in summer you can sit outside on a quiet street, which is where you want to be in summer anyway.

Pizza, or a splurge with a view

If you want pizza, Li Rioni in Celio does some of the best in Rome. Thin, Roman-style, the kind you order for the table and share.

For a special occasion, there is Aroma at the top of Palazzo Manfredi. World-class food and a view straight onto the Colosseum. It is not a casual dinner and it is not cheap, but if you are marking something, this is the one.

Gelato for the heat

In this weather, gelato matters more than usual.

Fatamorgana, just off Via Urbana in Monti, is some of the best in the city. One summer I had a fig and mango pairing there that I still think about. If you want something Sicilian, Ciuri Ciuri does real cannoli, filled when you order them.

Wherever you end up eating near the Colosseum, walk a few blocks before you sit down. Read my full guide here for addresses, the best coffee in the area, and where to find an outdoor table.

Buon appetito,
