Rome in August: How to Plan for Your Best Trip

Since I moved to Rome in 2001, I've come to look forward to August. The city empties out, it's quiet, and I can drive and park everywhere. Alessandro and I take the occasional trip out to the beach at Ostia for some downtime, the way Romans do, and I get to eat more gelato than usual.

If you're coming this month, I can tell you how to make the most of it.

​BEST THINGS TO DO IN AUGUST​

August is the month to live outdoors, especially at night. Visiting the Colosseum after dark is one of my favorites: cooler than the daytime, and a completely different experience.

Down by the river, Roma Estate Lungotevere runs all summer along the Tiber, with food, music, and cinema set up on both banks. It's free to wander through, and a nice way to spend a warm evening.

And when the heat climbs, do what Romans do and head to the beach. Ostia is close, and there are plenty of beaches within easy reach for a day trip.

​FERRAGOSTO​

The one thing to plan around is Ferragosto, August 15. Some places close around this date, but far fewer than they used to.

The exception to know: the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are always closed on the 15th. Churches stay open for the Assumption. Worth checking ahead if your trip lands mid-month.

​WHERE TO STAY IN ROME​

Two suggestions if you're coming this month. Stay in Trastevere. It's a genuinely local neighborhood, so it feels especially quiet in August, but you're still central enough to reach the sights easily.

Or look for a hotel with a pool. They're hard to find in the center, but you'll have more options just outside it. Just make sure you know how to get in and out for sightseeing.

Don't let the "too hot, everything's closed" myth talk you out Rome in August. August is quieter than people expect, the nights are lovely, and it's one of my favorite times to be in the city. If it's when you're coming, here's everything you need to plan it well.​
