Staying cool in Rome without wasting a day

Rome in Summer

HOW TO BEAT THE HEAT IN ROME

It is hot in Rome right now. Properly hot, the kind that decides how your day goes.

This is the kind of heat where a full day of sightseeing can drain you by early afternoon. I've spent a lot of summers here, and the people who enjoy Rome in this heat are the ones who plan around it instead of pushing through it. So here is exactly how I do it.

Start early, and I mean early

The couple of hours after sunrise are the best of the whole day. The light is soft, the big sites are quiet, and it is cool enough to walk. I get to whatever outdoor site I want to see first, then I am done with it before the heat sets in. By 11 I am looking for shade.

The Vatican is not your escape

This one surprises people. The Vatican Museums are not fully air-conditioned. Some rooms are warm, the crowds make it warmer, and it is one of the last places I would send you to cool off.

Instead opt for museums with real air conditioning like Galleria Borghese, Palazzo Altemps, and Palazzo Massimo. They are calm, comfortable, and a proper break from the sun.

Where I actually go to cool down

When the heat peaks, here are my favorite go-tos to stay cool:

Churches: Rome's churches are some of the easiest free relief in the city. Thick stone walls, dim light, and quiet. Perfect for the middle of the day when you just need to sit down and cool off.

🏺 Underground Rome: Some of the best sites here are below street level, where it stays cool no matter what the thermometer says up top. A different side of the city, and a smart way to spend the hottest part of the afternoon.

🌊 The beach: Rome has coastline closer than most people realize. When the city gets too much, a half day by the water resets everything.

BEFORE YOU GO

My full guide to keeping cool in Rome goes deeper: how to time your day around the heat, which museums and churches actually stay cool, the best underground sites, and how to fit in a beach afternoon without losing a whole day. If you are coming over this summer, it is the one thing I would read first.
